Bordered largely by the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers, Stafford County is a 250-square-mile stretch of the Virginia Commonwealth that has taken virtues from its proud history to form a consortium of strong, tight-knit communities.

Known prominently as George Washington’s boyhood home, Stafford County is also home to approximately 136,788, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The population of the county is spread amongst 12 communities where an undercurrent of pride and service of the nation runs strong. With a Marine Corps Base located in Quantico and the National Museum of the Marine Corps located nearby in Triangle, Stafford is able to host a number of events that celebrate and thank the selfless service these troops provide.

The Federal Government is the source of many jobs for those who reside in Stafford County with the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Department of Defense being among the top employers for the county, according to the Virginia Employment Commission. Despite the strong presence of the government, there is a wide range of employment opportunity in this vibrant region of Virginia. Other top employers in the area include GEICO, Walmart and McLane Mid-Atlantic trucking company.

Stafford County is a spirited community that brings together its residents with numerous events and organizations. The county is home to a network of trails and hiking paths that wind through the breathtaking countryside of Virginia and through some its most historic and interesting local sites. These beautiful paved and limestone paths will take visitors to sites like Government Island, a 17-acre historic stone quarry which was used to mine stone for the U.S. Capitol and White House. Other sites, such as the Stafford Civil War Park and Ferry Farm are easily accessible on foot or by car and bring visitors back in time to some of the most important events in the country’s history.

Those who are looking for a little bit more of a modern escape from the bustle of daily life can enjoy Stafford’s Grapes and Grains Trail. This path, which spans Stafford and into Spotsylvania, offers visitors a glimpse into a growing industry in the region: wine! Along the trail, connoisseurs can tour four wineries, a brewery and distillery and sample some of the area’s finest home-grown products.

Shopping in Stafford County

Stafford is home to a number of hardworking merchants who vend some of the finest and freshest products in the region. The Stafford County Farmers’ Market, which is located in the Staffordboro Commuter Parking Lot, is open on weekends year-round and features the very best from the area’s farmers and craftspeople. For national retailers, residents can venture out to the Stafford Marketplace where Kohl’s, TJ Maxx, Target and Lowe’s can provide home owners with the essentials.
