Situated in a prime location in the state of Maryland outside of Baltimore County, Howard County is one that offers an exquisite quality of life with plenty of amenities and recreation opportunities within arm’s reach. Deemed an “All-American County” by the National Civic League, Howard County is a gem in the Mid-Atlantic region of the country giving its residents a seamless blend of historic communities, pastoral farms, quintessential suburban centers and urban living.

Howard County has received a number of accolades over the years. It was named as having the best educated adults over the age of 25 in accordance with the U.S. Census Bureau, Forbes ranked it seventh for the best school system, American Libraries named it “First Among Great Public Library Systems,” USA Today named it the “Second Most Technologically Advanced Community in the U.S.” and American City Business Journals designated it as having the “Ninth Best Quality of Life.”

Given these outstanding achievements, it’s no surprise that the population has been steadily increasing in the past several decades. According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, roughly 304,500 people call Howard County home.

Amenities and Recreation

Given its location, Howard County is steeped in rich history and culture. The historic community of Ellicott City is home to the B&O Railroad Museum, which was the destination of the first 13 miles of the railway system in America. Along the historic Civil War trails, residents are able to follow the soldiers’ footsteps along nine sites.

Those more interested in the artistic way of life will find the African Art Museum, Artists’ Gallery and Chesapeake Shakespeare Company to be more their speed. These outstanding arts and culture attractions feature one-of-a-kind pieces that represent bits of the local community.

One great way to get to know the community is by attending annual events, and Howard County is host to a wide variety of festivals. The Blossoms of Hope Cherrybration Days, Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival, Preakness Celebration Hot Air Balloon Festival, Wine in the Woods, Ellicott City Fall Festival and Symphony of Lights are just a few of the opportunities residents have to mingle with neighbors.

Howard County boasts 24 community parks and six regional parks, giving its residents plenty of options to spend time outdoors, and that’s not including the seven golf courses, five lakes and more than 200 miles of hiking and biking trails. Staying active is nearly as commonplace for residents here as going to work.

Job and business opportunities abound given the prime location in the Baltimore-Washington Corridor, giving way for plenty of corporate and regional headquarters as well as an environment ideal for new companies. Howard County is noted for being the state’s leader in job creation with the highest concentration of professional, scientific and technical work in Maryland.
