It was officially formed in 1720, and named for King George I of England, who was Elector of Hannover in Germany when he assumed the British throne.

The county prides itself on maintaining its rural roots while still providing residents the quaint small town amenities blended with large businesses for a well-rounded mixed use of cultural and shopping experiences. Hanover is the hometown of Virginia’s first governor under the Constitution of 1776, Patrick Henry. You can dine in the 225-year-old Hanover Tavern that has hosted George Washington, Patrick Henry and the Marquis de Lafayette. Revolutionary armies and Civil War troops frequently visited the Tavern. In addition, residents enjoy the great outdoors at one of its many parks or rivers. You can conquer the thrills of Kings Dominion -- a 400-acre amusement park open from March through October -- featuring one of the largest roller coaster collections on the East Coast as well as a 20-acre water park.
