Along the banks of the mighty Potomac River in the Commonwealth of Virginia lies Prince William County. It is the second most populous county throughout the state with more than 430,000 residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and is included within the Washington, DC-Arlington-Alexandria metropolitan statistical area.

The county is divided into seven magisterial districts consisting of Brentsville, Coles, Potomac, Gainesville, Neabsco, Occoquan and Woodbridge. The county seat lies in the independent city of Manassas, a community of about 40,000 which was named after the first major land battle of the American Civil war fought nearby.

Prince William County is just 20 minutes from Dulles International Airport and less than 30 miles from Washington, DC. The county’s ideal location provides key access to resources for business, travel and fun.

Activities and Recreation

From shopping and dining to outdoor recreation and historical significance, Prince William County seems to have something for everyone. Being one of the earliest sites of contact with English settlers and the home to a number of important American Indian tribes, the county is steeped in American history and has many historical sites to prove it. Among the various historical sites in Prince William County are is the Ben Lomond Historic Site, which is a restored home that was converted into a hospital during the Civil War.

The communities of Prince William County have much to offer in the way of retail and shopping experiences. The Dale City Farmers Market hosts almost 50 vendors every Sunday from April to December and is one of the largest open-air markets in the region. The historic downtown areas of local towns such as Manassas also afford area home owners with opportunities to shop for very rare and unique vintage items.

There are two national parks within Prince William County: Prince William Forest Park and Manassas National Battlefield Park. In addition to these incredible sites, the Parks and Recreation Department oversees 50 parks, two water parks, two recreation centers, two community centers, six sports complexes and an ice skating rink.

Prince William County is also home to its very own minor league baseball team, the Potomac Nationals. The Nationals are an affiliate of the Washington Nationals and play in the high-A Carolina League.

Employment in Prince William County

A large portion of Prince William County home owners are employed by the county public school system and the county itself. The United States Department of Defense is also an important employer for residents. The department is headquartered in the Pentagon, which is located in nearby Arlington County.

Smaller businesses with less than 50 employees make up a significant portion of employers in Prince William County. The county’s Economic Development office offers various incentives to attract and retain small businesses to the area, creating a strong community around entrepreneurs and small businesses functioning in the greater economy.

Various local universities including George Mason, Stratford, Strayer and the University of Northern Virginia also house campuses throughout Prince William County. These entities provide growing sources of employment as well as a number of cultural and artistic opportunities and events for local communities.
