Spanning 213 square miles, Calvert County is home to more than 5,200 businesses ranging vastly in industries. With Baltimore roughly 55 miles north and Washington, DC about 35 miles northwest, Calvert County residents have ample opportunity to experience some of the finest world-class amenities, recreation and entertainment options as well as some of America’s most iconic historical and cultural sites.

The population has drastically increased over the past few decades, but it still remains one of Maryland’s less dense counties. According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of Calvert County was about 90,400 people as of 2013.

There are endless opportunities for leisure and recreation in Calvert County, and there is a little something that everyone can enjoy. Retail therapy isn’t difficult here and residents are able to find a hidden gem at various antique and specialty shops around town. The Chesapeake MarketPlace is favorite for locals, holding 100 shops, 80 of which are antique shops. The rest of the plaza features stores with handcrafted items, used books, foods and more.

Calvert County is also very known for its food culture. As a seafood lover’s oasis, Calvert County boasts restaurants with some of the finest steamed crab, oysters and rockfish that simply can’t be beat. And when it comes to where to eat, there are plenty of places to sit down for a meal and witness a breathtaking view of the water.

Wine enthusiasts rejoice in Calvert County with the five local wineries and vineyards specializing in incredible bottles of wine. While each one has its own character, Fridays Creek Winery sticks out amongst the rest as the winery is housed in an old, remodeled tobacco barn with roots from the 1920s.

Calvert County’s past was filled with tobacco farms primarily, but today there is a wide range of crops and farmers who produce seasonal fruits and vegetables sold at local farmers markets. It’s easy to support local farmers in Calvert County with four markets in addition to roadside stands. From spring to fall residents can bask in fresh and delectable produce at the unique markets.

In fact, agriculture and nature are very important to residents of Calvert County in general. But those who are interested in a different line of work will find plenty of opportunities as well. According to the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, some of the top employers in Calvert County include the Atlantic Group, Bartlett Nuclear, Bayside Toyota & Bayside Scion, Beltway Iron Company, Blueline Security Service and Bob Evans.
